Why Vinyl Siding Isn’t Suited to Cold Climates

Vinyl siding is one of the most affordable options on the market, but they’re not the best choice for homes in cold climates. Local siding company Elite Construction & Roofing lists the issues vinyl siding may encounter when exposed to sub-zero temperatures in this guide.

Siding

Brittleness and Fragility

Vinyl—which is a plastic product—becomes brittle when exposed to subzero temperatures. If enough pressure is applied to vinyl cladding or if it’s hit by wind-blown debris, cracks may form on the surface of your exterior.

Vulnerability to Wind Damage

One of the advantages of vinyl siding is that it’s lightweight. However, in cold climates and windy areas, this is more of a disadvantage. That’s because blizzard winds can dislodge vinyl cladding.

Thermal Expansion

In theory, lightweight siding panels are easier to install than siding made from heavy materials. However, this isn’t the case if you’re installing vinyl siding, which is tricky to install in both winter and summer. That’s because, as mentioned earlier, it’s susceptible to temperature changes. It contracts as temperatures drop and expand as temperatures rise. It’s estimated that 12-foot-long vinyl siding panels can expand by as much as 1/2 of an inch as temperatures increase. Repeated expansions and contractions can loosen the nails holding the siding panels in place and make it easier for strong winds to dislodge them or water to infiltrate your home.

Cost-Effective Alternatives to Vinyl Siding

What are some of the cost-effective alternatives to vinyl siding? Fiber cement siding is one. Unlike vinyl siding, fiber cement siding doesn’t expand or contract as temperatures change. It’s also durable enough to withstand sub-zero temperatures and is water-resistant, which means it can protect your interior from melting snow and ice. To learn more about your other siding options, consult a local siding contractor.

Here’s a tip: it’s best to consult local contractors. Since they’re more familiar with the local climate and building codes, they can make better recommendations.
